About Us

My photo
San Juan Archipelago, Washington State, United States
A society formed in 2009 for the purpose of collecting, preserving, celebrating, and disseminating the maritime history of the San Juan Islands and northern Puget Sound area. Check this log for tales from out-of-print publications as well as from members and friends. There are circa 750, often long entries, on a broad range of maritime topics; there are search aids at the bottom of the log. Please ask for permission to use any photo posted on this site. Thank you.

1899 ❖ OFF TO HONOLULU

You can read the lettering.
These antique copper stencils
were once used on the wooden barrels
made for shipping lime from
Roche Harbor,
San Juan Island,
San Juan Archipelago, WA.

The stencils have been donated to the

"The full-rigged American ship Standard, Captain Getchell of Portland, Maine, is at Roche Harbor to load 7,000 barrels of lime for Honolulu, Hawaii."
So far we have no photo of the vessel Standard but this news item pairs nicely with the copper stencils. Stop at the San Juan Island Historical Museum on Price Street in Friday Harbor, WA., when the pandemic allows.
